My top 10 Goals | Ben Painter

Another personal article on the website here are my top 10 goals in football, most of them are Liverpool based but there is a mix some for pure ability and some for what the goals meant. Starting in order with my favourite being last.

10) Tim Cahill vs the Netherlands

A superb strike from Cahill for Australia to equalise against the Netherlands a mere minute after Arjen Robben scored the opener at the 2014 World Cup Final. A goal of pure class and technique from Australia's best ever player and although he is an Everton legend I will always respect him for what he has done for Australian football. Australia lost the game in the end but proved they could battle against the best on the worlds biggest stage.

9) Steven Gerrard vs Middlesbrough

In my opinion one of Gerrard's best strikes, the technique on the finish is superb and it showed what the midfielder could do with a football. This goal is purely in here for technique however it still was an important goal as it was the equaliser in the game, a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough at Anfield.

8) Jon Flanagan vs Tottenham Hotspur

Flanagan's first and only goal for Liverpool, the full back had a great season in 2013/14 and I became a great admirer of him and it really was great to see him score. Although injuries plagued his time at Liverpool he will go down as a great cult hero for the Reds and this goal is him at his best.

7) Seb Coates vs QPR

The shock factor that Sebastian Coates scored an overhead kick goal is enough to warrant a place in my top 10 goals. A great effort from the Uruguayan to open the scoring in the game that Liverpool eventually went on to lose 3-2 thanks to two late goals from Queens Park Rangers, but the game will always be remembered for this goal from Coates.

6) Rickie Lambert vs Scotland

At 31 years of age and with his first touch of International football, Lambert came off the bench to head home a corner, a winner against rivals Scotland. It really does not get much better than that. Lambert has a great story in football and this surely is the highlight of that.

5) Devante Rodney vs Doncaster Rovers

In an absolute surreal goal for Hartlepool United, Pools needed to win and Newport to lose to avoid relegation out of the football league. With things looking bleak Hartlepool brought on Devante Rodney, who had not scored prior to this game and he scored the equaliser and then the winner which was enough for Hartlepool in the game. However, Newport won their game but for a moment Rodney could have scored the most important goals in Hartlepool's history.

4) Xabi Alonso vs AC Milan

Every goal in this game could go down as one of my top 10 goals, I'm sure everyone reading this knows what happened in the 2005 Champions League final. Steven Gerrard headed home a moment of hope, then Vladmir Smicer scored to really give the Reds hope. But Alonso stepped up and originally missed from the spot but converted the rebound and Liverpool were destined to win the Champions League thanks to the Spaniard's equaliser. Although not the most spectacular goal it certainly meant a lot.

3) Christian Pulisic vs Manchester City

This goal probably doesn't seem to special, but Pulisic's winner in this game was the goal that crowned Liverpool champions for the first time in 30 years. It would have been nice if this moment came from a Liverpool player, but it did not work out like that and the American's goal will always be the goal that gave Liverpool the title in 2019/20.

2) David Beckham vs Greece

Give that man a knighthood... Beckham's late equaliser against Greece sealed England's place in the 2002 World Cup and it was a fantastic goal from a freekick, which are always great goals that only the best of the best can score consistently, which Becks was. England goals are always special to me and this is the very pinnacle of that.

1) Divock Origi vs Barcelona

The perfect goal for me and this is why this my favourite, the final goal to make it 4-0 to Liverpool on the night and more importantly 4-3 on aggregate moving the Reds into the final of the Champions League, which of course they went on to win. The goal was a moment of brilliance from Trent Alexander-Arnold and this like many other important goals that season has cemented Origi's place as a Liverpool legend.
