Match Report: South Shields 5-2 Liversedge

A brace from Dylan Mottley-Henry and goals from Lewis Alessandra and Gary Liddle earned South Shields a crucial three points for Pitching In Northern Premier League promotion chase as the Mariners see off Liversedge 4-1.

After a display of pressure for South Shields at the 1st Cloud Arena, Alessandra headed home the first in the 20th minute

Mottley-Henry then fired home from close range in the 34th minute to double the lead.

Liversedge clawed one back through Geroge Proctor in the 42nd minute but Mottley-Henry bagged his brace in injury time to all but seal the three points at the break.

Gary Liddle scored from a corner in the 72nd minute but Nicholas Walker dragged another back for the away side from a freekick.

But Mackenzie Heaney well and truly sealed the three points with a well-earned goal in the 90th minute.

It was Liversedge who had the first real opportunity of the first half, Mylesy Boney had to make a great stop to deny Proctor in the ninth minute after he was played through on goal.

In the 18th minute, Mackenzie Heaney played a great ball across the face of goal for Alessandra to shoot but he dragged his shot wide of the mark.

Just two minutes later the Shields forward made up for it as he headed home a delectable back post cross from Robert Briggs.

Heaney showed his class and quality once again at the 25-minute mark, he played a fantastic ball inside to Alessandra but he snatched at the opportunity, he could have had a hattrick in the first half.

The Mariners kept piling on the pressure and in the 34th minute after a flurry of shots which were blocked by the Sedge defence, Mottley-Henry was there to turn in the rebound from close range.

Against the run of play, Liversedge clawed one back in the 42nd minute as Gary Liddle failed to get any real connection on a cross into the box, the ball fell to Proctor who slotted it into the bottom corner – giving the travelling side a glimmer of hope going into the second half.

This hope was quickly diminished as in injury time South Shields linked up well for the third; Heaney came inside and laid it off to Alessandra who crossed towards Darius Osei at the far post, Osei headed the ball across to Mottley-Henry who turned in his second.

It was the same again in the second half for South Shields as Kevin Phillips side pushed on for more opportunities.

In the 55th minute, Blair Adams’ strike was well saved by Patrick Boyes in goal for the Sedge, the rebound fell to Osei but the on-loan Hartlepool United shot-stopper was equal to the second chance.

Three minutes later Heaney produced a lovely curling effort into the bottom corner but if it wasn’t for a superb stretching save by Boyes it would have been a fourth for the rampant Mariners.

The fourth goal did come in the 72nd minute with Gary Liddle heading home a Martin Smith corner, producing a three-goal cushion for his side.

However, this lasted for all of three minutes as Nicholas Walker drilled in a well-worked freekick into the bottom corner making the scoreline sit at 4-2 with 15 minutes to go.

The three points were well and truly sealed in stoppage time as Heaney fired in an audacious effort that left Boyes rooted to the spot.

A delight for the Mariners under the lights and next up is a tough test away at Warrington Rylands on Saturday.
