Loan Watch: A busy game for Patrick Boyes as Liversedge beaten 5-2 by high flyers South Shields

Young Pools goalkeeper has been enjoying some first-team football this season on loan at Northern Premier League club Liversedge.

The club based in West Yorkshire are a new side to the league having won the Northern Premier League Division One East last campaign.

But the Sedge have been struggling, currently bottom of the pile, but Boyes has impressed during his short time at the club.

He has played four games during his loan spell that began in January, certainly kept busy but managed to keep a clean sheet in the game against Gainsborough Trinity that finished 1-0 to Liversedge.

On Tuesday night, it was more of the same as Boyes started in net for the Sedge and it was set to be a difficult test for the on-loan goalkeeper as South Shields are top of the league and with 51 goals scored so far, they know where the back of the net is.

Boyes made eight saves in the game including a fantastic double save in the 55th minute denying former Pools man Blair Adams and then Darius Osei. He also made great stop with his feet from the resulting corner, keeping his side in it at 3-1.

South Shields, who have a host of former Hartlepool United players, Lewis Alessandra, Gary Liddle, Blair Adams and Martin Smith all started in the game with Michael Woods unused on the bench.

Boyes did concede five in the match, however, with Alessandra heading home in the 20th minute and Dylan Mottley-Henry converted a rebound in the 34th minute.

Mottley-Henry finished a really good passage of play in injury time of the first half and then former team mate Liddle scored from corner on the 72nd minute mark.

The fifth goal came from Mackenzie Heaney who fired in a great effort that left Boyes rooted to the spot, it is hard to place blame for Boyes on each of the goals as most of them were really close to him and he couldn’t really do nothing about them.

Throughout the match, he showed glimpses of his distribution capabilities, in the 45th minute he took a freekick high up the pitch which led to a great chance for Liversedge.

There were times when his passing was in question but he always made up for it with a decent claim or a good stop, notably with his feet which he looked really solid.

He denied Heaney with a fantastic diving effort from the Shields man’s curling strike in the 62nd minute which showcased his reach.

Overall, a solid game for Boyes and this opportunity at Liversedge will no doubt teach the young shot-stopper a lot in improving his game.
