In February last year we took a look at the English players playing in leagues abroad last season, and there has been some movements.
Jadon Sancho returning to England with Manchester United, Jamal Musiala committing to Germany and also Demari Gray and Ashley Young returning to the Premier League.
So here is the updated XI of the English players playing abroad for the 21/22 season.
GK - ETIENNE GREEN - SAINT ETIENNE (LIGUE 1) 🇫🇷
English fans may not know the name of Etienne Green, born in Colchester he moved to France at four years old and rose through the ranks of Saint-Etienne.
At just 21 years old he has played 23 times for the first team including 15 games this season - his form has prompted a call up to the England Under 23 team. Which he has played for twice at the time of writing.
Could Green become the England number 1 one day, maybe a big move to his country of birth could be on the cards in the near future.
Etienne Green, plays for Saint Etienne who play in green.
RB - AINSLEY MAITLAND-NILES - AS ROMA (SERIE A) 🇮🇹
After finding his game time limited this season, he joined fellow Englishmen Tammy Abraham and Chris Smalling to sign for Jose Mourinho's AS Roma on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
He has one five caps for England so far and is hopefully looking to add to that after getting some well needed game time over in the Serie A.
Mainly used as wingback by Jose Mourinho, Maitland-Niles is also capable of playing in midfield which he has said is his preferred position.
CB- CHRIS SMALLING - AS ROMA (SERIE A) 🇮🇹
Smalling keeps his place in the side for this season, after a successful loan to Roma for the 2019/20 season he signed permanently the following campaign and is now into his third season at the club.
He has scored six goals in 75 games for the club, and there has been some questions about a potential return to the England team - he has not played since 2017 - but nothing has happened so far.
Smalling has proved that an English player can thrive in a top European league despite being at the later stage of his career.
CB - FIKAYO TOMORI - AC MILAN (SERIE A) 🇮🇹
The centre back paring remains the same as Tomori completed a £25million permanent move to AC Milan.
He has played 45 times and scored twice for the Rosseneri and even found his way back into the England team.
Still just 24 Tomori has a big future ahead of him for club and country and he could stake a claim to be England's number one centre back if he keeps up his great performances at the top level for Milan.
LB - OMAR RICHARDS - BAYERN MUNICH (BUNDESLIGA) 🇩🇪
After impressing for Reading in the Championship last season, Richards got a massive move to German giants Bayern Munich.
He has since played 13 times and has even won his first piece of silverware the DFL-Supercup, a great opportunity for the left back.
With injuries to Luke Shaw and Ben Chillwell, England do not have a lot of options at left back at the moment - if he gets more game time at Bayern there is no reason he shouldn't get a call up some time soon.
CM - JUDE BELLINGHAM - BORUSSIA DORTMUND (BUNDESLIGA) 🇩🇪
The star boy needs no introduction, Bellingham of course keeps his place in the side for this season.
Tipped with a return to England ahead of the season, Bellingham decided to remain with Borussia Dortmund is having another stellar campaign.
Still just 18 years old, the 10 time England international has 10 assists and four goals in 28 games for BVB this season - he really is the real deal already.
RM - NONI MADUEKE - PSV EINDHOVEN (EREDIVISIE) 🇳🇱
At just 19 years old, Madueke is enjoying a great campaign with PSV Eindhoven this season with six goals and one assist in 18 games.
Born in Barnet, Madueke played for the Tottenham Hotspur youth team but left for PSV in 2018 to seek regular game time.
He originally played for the youth team Jong PSV, but quickly broke through to their first team.
Madueke has played for England youth teams at multiple levels, most notably for the Under 21s recently - but with the form of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford in question, could their be space for the PSV winger in the senior team any time soon?
CAM - ANGEL GOMES - LOSC LILLE (LIGUE 1) 🇫🇷
Gomes was highly rated at Manchester United, making his debut in the 2016/17 season and going on to play ten times for senior team.
However, his game time was limited and upon the expiry of his contract he moved abroad in 2020 - signing for Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille.
He was immediately loaned out to Portugal, scoring six in 36 during the 2020/21 campaign for Primeira League side Boavista.
His form was enough to included in the now Ligue 1 champions side for this season and he has played 17 times, scoring twice and getting one assist.
LM - MARCUS EDWARS - VITORIA DE GUIMARAES (PRIMERIA LIGA) 🇵🇹
Edwards was born in Enfield in London and broke through the Tottenham Hotspur youth ranks. He only ever played for the first team once.
He joined Norwich on loan in 2018 - but only played once and then went out on loan in the Netherlands with Excelsior for the 2018/19 campaign.
Despite their relegation he played well for his first season abroad in 25 games he got two goals and four assists and completed the most successful dribbles per game that season in the Eredivisie at 3.3.
His form with Excelsior prompted Portuguese side Vitória de Guimarães to sign him after he left Tottenham.
He has 20 goals and 16 assists in 96 games over in Portugal a fantastic return for the now 23 year old. Could a call up for England be on the cards?
ST - TAMMY ABRAHAM - AS ROMA (SERIE A) 🇮🇹
Abraham requires little introduction, after successful high scoring loan spells with Bristol City, Swansea and Aston Villa - the forward got his chance with Chelsea.
He performed well but was never really the first choice striker for Chelsea, behind Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and new signing Romelu Lukaku.
The six foot three inch striker moved across the pond to Italy with AS Roma at the start of this campaign.
With 17 goals in 30 games and a return to the England squad the move has certainly worked out for him and he is most likely a shoo-in for the World Cup squad this winter.
ST - DANIEL STURRIDGE - PERTH GLORY (A-LEAGUE) 🇦🇺
Sturridge had the makings of an excellent career, starting with Manchester City, then moving on the Chelsea before settling with Liverpool.
His first full season with Liverpool in 2013/14, is were he really made his name scoring 24 goals in 33 games for the Reds as they finished second in the Premier League.
Sadly, he never reached those heights again as multiple injuries got in the way and eventually he left Liverpool in 2019.
He signed for Turkish SuperLig side Trabzonspor as he has his first club away from England, he scored seven goals in 16 games - a very good return.
But, he left the club after that season - having been banned for four month for breaching betting rules - he signed for A-League side Perth Glory.
He has played just three times so far this season over in Australia and has been linked with a move back to Turkey with second tier side Adanaspor to link up with friend and former Liverpool teammate Jordon Ibe.
