5 things we learned from Weymouth vs Hartlepool

It was a defeat for Hartlepool United yesterday, but it was not all doom and gloom as there was plenty of things to look back on reflect on despite the loss.

1) Silly errors at the back can be costly

Weymouth's only goal of the back came from a free kick that was whipped in and headed home by Josh McQuoid. Ryan Johnson gave the ball away clumsily, which forced Timi Odusina into making a foul which they then scored from. It was a silly foul to give away and it did not need to be done. The Pools defence is young and you will expect things like this to happen but Dave Challinor just needs to work on cutting out silly fouls and the defenders will learn from their experiences. Weymouth scored once and sat on the 1-0 they gained and this wouldn't have happened if the silly foul did not happen.

2) Pressure

The five at the back that Pools are playing is very good for building up pressure especially through the wingbacks Jamie Sterry and David Ferguson. Before the signing of Luke Armstrong, Pools struggled to put the ball in the back of the net off the back of the pressure they keep piling on and this was the case in yesterday's game. The pressure is on Armstrong to score and this shouldn't be the case, they should not really on just him to find a way through and the burden needs to spread out to the other forwards - but they have struggled to score so far this season.

3) Playing out of the defence

Johnson and Lewis Cass played in left centre back and right centre back and they looked good when they were bringing it out from back, similar to how Sheffield United play with their centre backs. With the wingbacks pushing up the field it allows for the centre backs to drift further forward and get something going for Pools. Cass and Johnson had a solid game and enjoyed much of the ball which can be used to Pools' advantage going forward in the campaign.

4) Luke Molyneux can be hotheaded

Molyneux came off the bench only to get sent off and he has proven at times to have a bit of temper. It may come from frustration from not starting for Pools but the winger needs to calm it down slightly and not get too carried away as he has real ability and could be a real asset for Pools going forward.

5) The triple change was a bit risky

Challinor made a triple change in 60th minute, reverting to a four at the back, and making all three changes fairly early into the second half was risky and Molyneux's sending off proved that to be the case. Putting all your eggs into one basket is always a risk and the subs should have been spread out. You can see why Challinor made the changes as they did need to be happen but all three changes is always a risk and it wasn't one that paid off yesterday.
